Miss England 2024, Milla Magee’s Beauty with a Purpose project is called #GoFarwithCPR. Milla has been spreading awareness and teaching life-saving Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) skills. She has taught CPR in many schools and is campaigning to make it compulsory in the education curriculum.
Milla says, “It’s a skill that you can do wherever you are in the world, but it is the difference between life and death. Both of my grandfathers passed away before I was born due to heart attacks. I feel like if I can use my voice and this opportunity, not only to represent our beautiful country but for positive change and for good, that is what my purpose is”.
Milla is also a qualified lifeguard, with a life mission to save as many people as possible through supervising the safety and rescue of swimmers, surfers and other water sports participants.
To extend her Beauty with a Purpose project, Milla has joined the nation’s leading first-aid charity- St John’s Ambulance- in order to help the National Health Service (NHS) and inspire others to join.
Milla attends weekly meetings as a volunteer to help and teach life-saving skills. Another bonus is that she attends festivals and events across the country, ready to provide first aid to any attendees in need.
St John’s Ambulance has been providing first aid and first aid training for over 140 years.
However, their legacy dates all the way back to 11th-century Jerusalem, where the first Knights of St. John set up a hospital to provide free medical care to sick pilgrims. They have evolved as an Order and as an organisation, devoted to their communities with the volunteer uniform still proudly displaying the eight-pointed cross worn by those first Knights of St John.
Milla was part of the St John’s Ambulance Truro Unit at this year’s Pride event in Newquay. There she demonstrated the skills she had learned from the team and inspired others to volunteer.
Milla said, “I am so excited to be at Pride this year, in Newquay, along with St John’s Ambulance Truro, the unit that I volunteer for. St John’s Ambulance is a huge part of our community. They are at festivals and social events, they help with minor first aid and everything from broken bones to heat fatigue. They were a huge part of helping the NHS during Covid lockdown, we expect St John’s Ambulance to be there for the community, but don’t realise that they are predominantly made up of volunteers like myself and our team leader Nicola Ginns.”
“I hope by being here today I can inspire people to get involved with St John’s Ambulance and apply to volunteer. It’s a great community! Our regular weekly meetings are great fun, you’re really coming together, meeting new people, and learning amazing life-saving skills, like CPR, something I am passionate about with my Beauty With A Purpose project #GoFarwithCPR. Let’s create a world of mini life-savers, to help our NHS, and help to save lives.”
